Wakarusa Township has the unenviable distinction of having lost a firefighter in the line of duty. On March 19, 1969, Larry Riggs suffered fatal injuries in a tanker rollover. Every year, approximately 100 firefighters die in the line of duty nationwide. In an effort to learn from our past, members of the Wakarusa Fire Department are committed to the memory of those that have come before us. While tragic and painful to discuss, valuable lessons can be learned from each fallen firefighter. Line of Duty Deaths and the circumstances surrounding them are regularly discussed at meetings and trainings. All departments that suffer line of duty deaths are sent a condolence letter in an effort to provide support for our fellow brothers and sisters.
